Releasing The Narcissus Within - Nurture Your Inner Muse

Echo and Narcissus
Many of you already know the story of Echo and Narcissus. The famous Irish playwright, poet and  author, Oscar Wilde, gives us a different ending to this story. In Wilde's version when Narcissus died, the Oreads, who were goddesses of the woods, came and saw that the waters of the pool had changed into salt tears.

"Why are you crying? asked the Oreads.
I’m weeping for Narcissus.
We do not wonder that you should mourn for Narcissus in this way, they said. After all, we could only run after him through the forest, but you could gaze on his beauty from close to.
But was Narcissus beautiful? asked the pool.
Who better than you to know? the Oreads replied, somewhat taken aback. It was, after all, on your banks that he would lie each day.
The pool was still for a moment. Then it said:
I weep for Narcissus, but I never noticed that he was beautiful. I weep for him because whenever he lay on my banks and looked into my waters, I could see my own beauty reflected in his eyes."

I rather like this perspective.  Narcissus was looking only at himself which caused his destruction. In Wilde's version of this myth I believe the pool was looking outward. The pool was willing to go beyond its own boundaries, to dream, to gaze outward, to share itself with Narcissus, and the pool's sharing was rewarded with beauty and a full sense of self-worth being reflected back in to itself.   When we share ourselves openly and honestly with others our lives are so much more rewarding and full.  This, I believe is very much like the creative process.  When we focus too much on ourselves and worry what others will think of us, we stifle our creativity.  We hold it inside.  We don't let it blossom out and share it with the world.  It is our fear of failure and rejection that keeps us focused on ourselves.  We play it safe.

I discovered this very interesting and funny video produced by TED - Ideas Worth Spreading.  Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Love, Pray, discusses ancient history and the creative process. She encourages us to release our fears and follow our dreams, to step out and do the best that we can.  When we gaze out to the world and are open to exploring new things, inspiration will be reflected back to us.   Open the door to sharing your vision...be creative.  That's what we are called to do.   Sometimes we hit it big. Sometimes we miss. That's okay. The most important thing is to try.
This video is lengthy but well worth watching.  It inspired me.  I hope it inspires you too!
(Please turn off the music playlist to watch.)

I believe we should take Ms. Gilbert's advice.  Don't let our inner narcissus stop us from trying new things.  Listen to the inner muse.  We want the world to believe that everything we touch turns to gold.  We are magnificent.  What if we produce something that is just so-so?  Our inner narcissus says, "Don't even try.  They will find out you are not a genius.  You are plodding along just like the rest of them."    So we take our fears and we stuff our true desires out of fear of the unknown.  We talk ourselves down.   I'm not good enough.  What if I write this story and it's not fabulous?  The world will know I'm not the greatest writer.  If I show my true self they will see I am not the most beautiful person on the planet."

Try anyway.  We don't have to be the greatest in the world, we just have to be real, be true to ourselves, just be.   By being true to ourselves we WILL  live our very best life.

TED says of this inspiring woman, "Elizabeth Gilbert faced down a pre-midlife crisis by doing what we all secretly dream of – running off for a year. Her travels through Italy, India and Indonesia resulted in the mega bestselling and deeply beloved memoir Eat, Pray, Love, about her process of finding herself by leaving home."

Be vulnerable,  risk fearlessly traversing the unknown,  risk failure, risk success, only then will we be able  to discover our truest and best self.  Even in our failures we discover who we are, what we are capable of, and we understand even more clearly what we truly desire.   Step out of fear and in to the creative process.  Nurture your inner Muse!

“That which causes us trials shall yield us triumph: and that which make our hearts ache shall fill us with gladness. The only true happiness is to learn, to advance, and to improve: which could not happen unless we had commence with error, ignorance, and imperfection. We must pass through the darkness, to reach the light.”

Albert Pike, American lawyer, journalist and soldier 1809-1891

Carpe Diem Everyone!

You've put this all together in an interesting way, Kelly. (I've seen the Elizabeth Gilbert video before; it really IS inspiring.)

You know, my adoption of the "be drunken" philosophy is quite similar. I'm naturally a very cautious, staid person and I need to constantly encourage myself to go beyond my self-erected boundaries.

Thank you!

A very well written wise post...that's all my W's! The hardest thing to do is let ourselves open up...there is so much fear of rejection as we are a society of acceptance. I think we all have those urges to back off with fear...I know I do at times. Looking back at mistakes were actually steps forward...one just needs to learn from them.
I really enjoyed this post!!!

Thank you, Bee. When I watched her video it was very inspiring to me. I, too, am naturally rather shy, so blogging for me began as an exercise in putting myself out there and trying to go beyond my own self-erected boundaries. I believe we all need to be reminded. Even the narcissist who is only looking at himself is actually, I feel, quite insecure. Somehow what Elizabeth Gilbert said and the story of Narcissus seemed to ring true to me and fit. I hope I've expressed it in a way others will understand what I'm trying to say.

I love your "Be Drunken" quote on your page and philosophy. You have inspired me with your words many times when visiting you. It's always a real treat to stop by your blog.

Thanks for your nice words about my post. I do appreciate it :)

Hi Cyrus :)
The video is long but I find her perspective very interesting. Maybe the ancients were right. In our "it's all about me" society today I think we miss out on a lot. They allowed for failure by saying oh, well, the Gods weren't with me today. They didn't believe everything came from within them. They understood that there was possibly a greater power or outside influence encouraging them to even greater heights. When we make everything about us, we don't take the time to look outward and appreciate the creative inventions of others and we miss so much. Our fear of losing something we already have stops us from stretching, stops us from taking the risk of creating or discovering something even better.

Sharing and loving and not being afraid to try new things...isn't that what makes life great? I think so. When I make it "all about me" that's when I'm usually the most unhappy.

Have a Happy Day, Cyrus :) Good to see you here :)
Hugs :)

Thanks, Alicia. I agree with you that our mistakes usually end up to be steps forward. It sure doesn't feel that way at the time, but the best of us comes from the stretching and learning. That's never a pain-free process, is it?

Elizabeth Gilbert certainly took a risk, followed her dreams and discovered herself in the process. If you have not read the book, Eat, Love, Pray, it is an excellent one to try.

Love and Hugs, Alicia :)

I love your posts, Kelly. They are well prepared, designed and presented - and always provide something to learn or think about. I can always use new ways to think about how to activate the muse!

I love TED.com - don't you discover the most interesting people and information there?

Take care!

Good, KJ!! Focusing away from ourselves and letting go of fear, searching for the magic, nurturing the inner muse will always bring us to a place more wonderful than where we started or can even begin to imagine.

Hi Val :) I think that's a great Facebook status! :))

In my life I have found that when I put myself out there the blessings are returned multiple times over. We just need to be brave and get out of ourselves and let our creative energy flow. I love how in the video Gilbert speaks about telling the creative "Gods"...hold up, I'm busy...come back when I've got a pencil and paper in my hands...LOL She says do your part. That's all we can really do, isn't it? It is okay to fail. If we don't try we will never know. No regrets :)

Hugs to You, Val :)

Thanks for complimenting my post...I was being brave...LOL

Hi Shadow :)
Thanks!
Honesty is a very important character trait to me. I have learned in life that when you are not honest with yourself or others nothing works right. We are often so afraid to let our truth be know for fear of rejection but when we are honest and open with others then they either love us or hate us...or maybe just like us a little...lol...but at least it's real! I like having that confidence of reality in my relationships in life.

I know you are very well in touch with your inner Muse, Shadow! Your poems are a daily treat...like a little present :) I love it!

Hugs to You, Shadow :)))

And thank you for your kind words. I love the idea of not only risking failure but risking success! Success often has a price to pay equal to that of failure. Rather than living in fear if we think to ourselves, well, I'm going to risk success...well, what can I say, I think it's such a positive and encouraging way to think. I just love it!
Hugs and Love to You, Duta :)

Yes, Renee, that's where I originally discovered it too. It is such a loving concept of looking outward rather than only at oneself, and having beauty, esteem, acceptance and love reflected back.

I have known people like that in my life...when looking into them, they make me feel loved, esteemed, accepted and beautiful.

Being self-centered doesn't allow us the opportunity to experience the fullness of love and joy in our relationship with others. I believe it destroys all the joy we have in life.

The video is inspiring too. I really enjoy her perspective on life.

It has been a fun exercise to think about these concepts. I'm glad you enjoyed them too :)

HI KELLY - my favorite California girl! :-)

I am not all that big on labels - words that kinda define by whatever perspective. Narcissus? Narcissistic? we are all such at times, ya know? I so admire how you put this all together and the video was perfect. What I missed? Was more of "you" - my favorite California girl who, just by being you, requires 'no fluff'.!! And I say this with all due love, respect and true admiration.

Love you girl
Gail

TheChicGeek said...

Hi Gail :)
Hmmmmmm, I didn't know I was being fluffy? LOL I suppose that is the "chic" part of the "geek" personality :) Sometimes I like a little fluff...LOL

I agree that we are all narcissistic at times and I suppose what I'm trying to say is that's the part I wish to become less prominent. I wish to be a person that looks outward, not one that is self-centered and focused on myself all the time. For me, when I worry about what everyone else thinks I am not true to myself. I tend to be a people pleaser so I suppose, I'm always looking for the middle ground. Maybe trying to please people comes from a fear-based place too??? Fear of disappointing people. I have to think about that. Hmmmmmmm...

And you are always welcome to disagree with your favorite California girl :))) I always appreciate hearing different perspectives and I know you come from a place of love because that's just the kind of person that you are :) I appreciate your friendship very much!

Love and Hugs to you, Gail :)

Dear Kelly, this post and the video together were brilliant. Gilbert was incredibly honest and moving and energetic about her concept, which really promotes the idea that the creative genius is to be shared, and shared with a good spirit.
I think the blogging community understand this, don't you? We sort of take it in turns to inspire one another, and accept being inspired as part of the same creative process.
It is a gift to be part of a community, humbling us and encouraging us all at the same time.

TheChicGeek said...

Shaista, thank you. I adore the energetic and honest way that Gilbert speaks about the creative process. And your words, "creative genius is to be shared, and shared with a good spirit," perfect! I see every day how the blogging community inspires one another and it truly is a humbling and moving experience to be a part of that community. It is a gift, isn't it?
Thank you for your kinds words. I had fun thinking about these concepts and writing about them.

I do so love your blog and the poetry that you write. You are a remarkable woman and I'm honored to have met you.

And, "The only true happiness is to learn, to advance, and to improve: which could not happen unless we had commence with error, ignorance, and imperfection."
There is no failure there, is there? Our trials or mistakes are merely lessons and by experiencing them we advance to higher ground. I think once a person really understands that concept and takes it in, life becomes a much happier place. We keep looking toward the horizon and doing our part and the journey becomes a wonderful adventure!
Hugs to You, Alexandra :)

Elizabeth Gilbert is a brave and amazing woman...she did what we all dream of. To really step out of our comfort zone and just fly is such a hard thing to do. There are not many of us that are really able to release our fears in such a dramatic way and follow our dreams. It's the truly great ones that do, isn't it? They inspire us! They encourage us to try...even if our ways aren't as Big or Dramatic...we try in our own small ways and I'm thankful for that inspiration.

Wonderful post Kelly. I love the artwork, is it Waterhouse?

I like Wildes version of the water seeing itself in Narcissus eyes.
It is true, we all need to listen to our inner muse.
Sometimes i'll be in a crocheting slump and won't have the urge to crochet anything. Then out of nowhere, my inner muse will visit, as I like to say, and I'll just start creating. Whether it be a toy, or a scarf....creating something unique is very relaxing for me, its a great outlet.

I see you put the Tao Te Ching quote on your sidebar :) So did I, I love that one!

Yes, Naida, it is Waterhouse. I love his paintings. They are very romantic. I often feel I want to jump into them. He has a gift of creating movement and evoking emotion through paint. You have a good eye ;)
(I should properly credit the artwork. I need to make a point to do that in the future.)

What you say is so true about the creative process. Don't you love the feeling when you get an idea and you just run with it...like your crochet. It feels so good.

And yes, I loved that quote so much I put it on the side bar. I'm reading the book through Daily Lit too :) I think it's the perfect way to do a book like that...so much to absorb and you get it in little bits at a time.

I like the take on this. And being vulnerable, allowing ourselves to put ourselves in a situation of vulnerability -- it's tough because we are so in tune with self-protection. It does come down to risking, doesn't it?

TheChicGeek said...

I think so Sherry, but we can take intelligent risks...weigh our options. Sometimes though, I believe there are situations that you just have to go for it...everyone will tell you no, but if you feel it is right deep down in your heart, then you should try...you won't know what will happen until you do. :)

What I find so interesting is that even great authors suffer from insecurity about their work. I believe it's because writing makes you feel so vulnerable. I think expressing yourself and showing how you truly feel is an intimidating thing for anybody.

TheChicGeek said...

I agree with you, Des. I believe to write our best work we do need to be vulnerable. I think it is just human nature to be scared to really put ourselves out there. We never really see ourselves as others see us, do we? Thank goodness for the bravery of those great writers and artists who are willing to do just that, be fearless and vulnerable, to just follow their hearts and souls and be so open and honest to share them with us.
